| Fox Island Living To those who make Fox Island their residence, the first inkling that they've arrived is when crossing the Fox Island bridge from the mainland. From the bridge you can see the island's icon, the historic Tanglewood lighthouse and lodge, which anchor awesome clear-day Kodak moments of Mt. Rainier to the east. And to the west, views of the jagged Olympia Mountain range remind most folks that they're not dreaming, they're home. From Here to There Between one and two miles wide and five miles in length, Fox Island is about 5 miles southwest of Gig Harbor. Travel miles to downtown Tacoma is about 20, and a trip to SeaTac airport, with no traffic impediments, takes only 45 to 50 minutes. Seattle and Olympic can be reached in about an hour. From Luxury to Commonplace Fox Island is deceiving. One of the highest per capita income areas in Washington state (second only to Mercer Island), many upscale yet affordable waterfront and view homes line its shores, but reasonably priced homes in small neighborhoods are for sale as well. Rural Atmosphere The island's charm is that it remains relatively undeveloped, without urbanization. There's a country store with its own gas station and a post office next door. That's about as commercial as you can get here. Scattered around the island as well are two churches, a yacht club, and a community center, which becomes the centerpiece for the biggest event of the year, the mid-August Fox Island Fair.
